Description
This is a Lefever Nitro Special side-by-side break-action shotgun chambered in 12 gauge, manufactured by the Lefever Arms Company in Ithaca, New York. The barrels feature a central sighting rib with a single brass bead and are marked verbatim LEFEVER NITRO SPECIAL and LEFEVER ARMS CO. ITHACA, N.Y. on the top of the left and right tubes respectively. The boxlock receiver retains traces of its original case-hardened colors and features a roll-engraved scene of a flying waterfowl on both the left and right sides. Internal markings on the receiver flats and the barrel lug include the serial number 245590 and the gauge designation 12. The shotgun is equipped with a checkered walnut pistol grip stock and a matching splinter-style forend, both exhibiting a dark natural finish. It features a dual trigger configuration and a tang-mounted sliding safety. The butt has been modified with a vintage Jostam Mfg. Co. Hy-Gun ventilated rubber recoil pad, which is explicitly marked with patent dates of DEC. 29, 1914, OCT. 12, 1915, and SEP. 20 1927. Note – All firearms require a federal 4473 background check.
Condition report:
The barrels retain approximately 40% of their original blued finish, which has thinned to a dark patina and shows scattered areas of oxidation and light surface pitting. The receiver displays a mottled gray appearance with faint traces of case-hardened colors remaining in the more protected areas. The bores were not visually inspected but the action appears to function correctly based on external mechanical manipulation. The wood stock and forend show significant field wear consistent with age, including numerous scratches, dings, and impressions, though the checkering remains defined. The Jostam recoil pad is hard, cracked, and shows substantial age-related deterioration.
