Description
This lot consists of a collectible two-piece cardboard box of 50 rounds of .38 Automatic Colt smokeless ammunition manufactured by the Remington Arms-Union Metallic Cartridge Co. in Bridgeport, Connecticut. These centerfire cartridges feature metal cased bullets and were expressly adapted for use in the early Colt automatic pistols of the era. The lid of the box is prominently marked .38 AUTOMATIC COLT SMOKELESS / 50 CENTRAL FIRE CARTRIDGES and features the Remington UMC trade mark along with the full company name Remington Arms-Union Metallic Cartridge Co. Ammunition and Firearms Union Metallic Cartridge Works Bridgeport, Conn. U.S.A. and the number 248. The side panels include a facsimile signature of Colt’s Patent Fire Arms Mfg. Co. and instructional text regarding the smokeless powder load and its adaptation for the .38 Automatic Colt. The bottom of the box displays a manufacturer guarantee in both English and Spanish and is stamped with the code M 28. Each individual cartridge features a brass case headstamped REM-UMC 38 ACP and a central fire primer, many of which are stamped with the letter U. Condition report:
The two-piece cardboard box shows significant shelf wear consistent with age, including areas of paper loss on the sides, edge abrasions, staining, and some separation of the decorative labels. The red printed text and graphics remain mostly clear and legible. The ammunition cases exhibit a dark aged patina with some localized tarnish. The metal cased bullets show light oxidation and surface discoloration but appear structurally sound. Primers show typical darkening and light surface corrosion. This lot is sold as a collectible item and functionality of the ammunition cannot be guaranteed.
