Description
This Savage Model 1903 is a slide-action repeating rifle chambered for .22 Short, Long, and Long Rifle cartridges. The firearm is configured with a 24 inch octagonal barrel and utilizes a detachable box magazine, a notable feature for its era. The metal components, including the receiver and barrel, exhibit a transitioned gray patina with areas of thinning finish and scattered surface oxidation. The rifle features a straight-grip walnut buttstock with a crescent-shaped metal buttplate and a ribbed wooden slide-action forend. It is equipped with a blade front sight and a screw-adjustable sporting rear sight. Key markings include the manufacturer and location on the top barrel flat transcribed as MANUFACTURED BY THE SAVAGE ARMS CO. UTICA. NEW YORK, U.S.A. and the caliber designation 22 S., L & L.R. further back. The serial number 4638 is stamped on the lower tang. The included detachable magazine is marked 22 S, L & L.R. SAVAGE ARMS COMPANY PAT APRIL 28 1908. Note – All firearms require a federal 4473 background check.
Condition report:
The rifle is in good original condition, displaying a transitioned gray patina on the barrel and receiver with visible wear, thinning, and minor surface oxidation consistent with age. The bore is not clearly visible for inspection. The walnut stock and forend show numerous light scratches, handling dings, and surface marks but remain structurally sound. The action appears to cycle correctly, and the magazine fits well, though we have not function-tested this firearm.
