Description
This lot features 50 rounds of .44 S. & W. Special centerfire ammunition contained within a vintage two-piece red cardboard box. The cartridges are loaded with 246-grain lead bullets, comprising a mix of round-nose and hollow-point configurations. The box was produced by the Remington Arms Union Metallic Cartridge Company at the UMC Bridgeport Works in Connecticut. Transcription of the lid labels includes 44 S. & W. SPECIAL SMOKELESS, 50 CENTRAL FIRE CARTRIDGES, and 246 GR. BULLET alongside the Remington UMC trademark. Side markings state that the ammunition is ESPECIALLY ADAPTED FOR .44 SMITH & WESSON HAND EJECTOR AND OTHER ARMS. The ammunition itself is mixed, with visible headstamps including REM-UMC 44 S&W SPL and at least one specimen from Western-Winchester marked W-W 44 S&W SPL.
Condition report:
The two-piece cardboard box shows significant shelf wear, with large portions of the paper labels missing from the top lid and side panels. The box exhibits fraying at the edges and some structural softening. The brass cartridge cases show age-related tarnish and localized spots of green verdigris. The lead bullets display common white oxidation, often referred to as lead bloom. The ammunition is sold as a collectible item and has not been tested for functionality.
