Description
This fraternal fez and its corresponding cylindrical carrying case belonged to the celebrated American outdoor writer, handloader, and firearms authority Elmer Keith. The fez is crafted from red wool felt and is associated with the Algeria Shrine Temple located in Helena, Montana. The front of the garment is adorned with a large, hand-worked emblem in gold bullion wire. This insignia features a scimitar and a crescent moon; the crescent is filled with a green silk ground and the word ALGERIA worked in gold bullion. Positioned below the scimitar is a gold bullion wire-embroidered pyramid. A long black corded tassel is attached to the crown of the hat.
The interior of the fez contains a white silk label featuring the name F. E. Keith hand-embroidered in red script. Printed text below the name identifies the manufacturer as The C. E. Ward Co. of New London, Ohio. The item includes its original burgundy-colored storage case. A typed paper label on the bottom of the case identifies the owner as F. E. Keith and specifies the size.

Condition report:
The fez is in very good to excellent vintage condition. The red felt is vibrant and the bullion wire work remains bright and intact with no significant oxidation. The interior silk label shows some light moisture staining and discoloration. The carrying case is in fair condition, displaying significant surface wear, abrasions, and scuffing to the outer finish throughout.
