Description
This lot consists of a two-piece cardboard box containing 50 rounds of .38 S. & W. caliber centerfire ammunition manufactured by The Union Metallic Cartridge Co. of Bridgeport, Connecticut. These antique cartridges are black powder loads featuring a 15-grain powder charge and a 146-grain lead round-nose bullet seated in a brass case with a copper primer. The box features original labels with prominent transcriptions including 50 .38 S. & W. Central-Fire Cartridges, 15 Gr. Powder, 146 Gr. Bullet, and the red UMC trademark circle. One side of the box prominently displays the Smith & Wesson script logo, while the end labels identify the contents as black powder. Each cartridge headstamp is marked U. M. C. and .38 S. & W. verbatim. The underside of the box includes a printed guarantee label listing compatibility with arms from Smith & Wesson, Colt, Winchester, Marlin, Remington, Savage, and Stevens. Condition report:
The box exhibits significant age-related wear, characterized by heavy staining, edge fraying, and some tearing to the paper labels, though the primary text and graphics remain largely legible. The ammunition shows oxidation on the lead bullet surfaces, appearing as a dull grey or white powdery finish, and the brass cases have developed a dark natural patina. The primers are intact and the box appears to be a complete and original grouping as specified.
