Description
This vintage outdoor cutlery set is a functional combination of a Western W10 hatchet and a W66 fixed-blade hunting knife, designed as a matched field set. The hatchet features a full tang high-carbon steel construction with dark hardwood handle scales secured by two brass rivets and finished with a flared aluminum pommel. Verbatim markings on the hatchet blade include WESTERN, U.S.A. W10, and the letter E. The accompanying skinner-style knife features a clip-point blade, a brass crossguard, and matching hardwood scales accented by red, white, and black spacers. Verbatim markings on the knife ricasso specify WESTERN, U.S.A. W66, and the letter B. The set is housed in a single dual-compartment brown leather sheath featuring white contrast stitching, metal rivet reinforcements, an embossed Cabela’s script logo, and snap fasteners embossed with WESTERN CUTLERY. The hatchet has a blade edge of approximately 2.75 inches with a total tool length of 9.25 inches, while the knife has a 4.5 inch blade and an overall length of 9 inches.
Condition report:
The steel components of both the hatchet and knife exhibit significant surface oxidation, dark graying, and visible pitting consistent with field use and age. The brass crossguard and handle rivets show heavy green verdigris. The hardwood handle scales are structurally sound but show surface wear and minor scuffs. The aluminum pommels display oxidation and light impact dings. The knife blade has been sharpened and shows numerous surface scratches and minor edge wear. The leather sheath remains in fair condition with some surface scuffing, darkening of the leather from use, and slight fraying at the edges, though the stitching remains largely intact and the snaps are functional.
