Description
This lot consists of a vintage two-piece green paper-wrapped cardboard box for .22 Short rimfire ammunition manufactured by the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. of New Haven, Connecticut. The top label is prominently marked 50 METALLIC CARTRIDGES / No 22 and features the company name alongside an H trademark and a reference to STETSON’S PATENT APR. 14 1871. Edge labels further identify the contents as .22 SHORT 1/2 TARGET CARTRIDGES and note a lubrication patent date of Sept. 12, 1882. The box contains 43 rounds and casings, many bearing the H headstamp on copper cases. The packaging displays moderate to heavy wear consistent with its age, including significant paper loss, scuffing, and tearing along the edges and corners. The ammunition itself shows heavy age-related oxidation, including white lead oxide on the projectile surfaces and green verdigris on the copper cases. Note – As an antique or black powder firearm, this item does not require a background check.
Condition report:
The paper-wrapped cardboard box is in fair condition, exhibiting heavy shelf wear, scuffing, and significant paper loss particularly to the edges and corners of the lid. The internal cardboard structure remains intact but shows softening. The 43 cartridges and casings are in relic condition with heavy oxidation present; lead bullets are coated in white lead oxide, and the copper cases show extensive verdigris and darkening. The assortment includes both live rounds and spent casings.
