Description
This lot consists of a collection of 38 rounds of .22 Savage High Power centerfire rifle ammunition, specifically engineered for use in the Savage Model 1899 repeating rifle. The grouping features two distinct vintage factory boxes from prominent early 20th-century manufacturers. The first is a tan Remington-UMC box for 70-grain pointed metal-cased bullets, with cartridges bearing headstamps marked REM-UMC 22 HP. Verbatim markings on this box include FOR SAVAGE HIGH POWER RIFLES 1899 MODEL, 22 HIGH POWER METAL CASED POINTED BULLET, and .22 SAVAGE HIGH POWER SMOKELESS REMINGTON ARMS COMPANY, INC. The second is a red Savage Arms Corporation box containing 70-grain soft-point expanding bullets intended for use with smokeless powder, with cartridges headstamped 22 S.H.P. S.A. CORP. This box is marked 20 cartridges 70 grain Soft Point and SAVAGE .22 Hi-Power FOR SAVAGE REPEATING RIFLES MODEL 1899. The cartridges are primarily seated in their original cardboard trays within the worn factory packaging.
Condition report:
The vintage ammunition boxes exhibit significant shelf wear commensurate with age, including frayed edges, corner splits, surface staining, and minor losses to the paper labels. The ammunition is in various states of preservation, with many rounds displaying a dark aged patina. There is visible surface oxidation present on several of the brass cartridge cases and some white oxidation on the exposed lead bullet tips. The internal cardboard dividers remain present but show structural softening and wear. The ammunition appears to be in live condition and is offered as a collectible lot.
