Description
This is a single 19th century heavy duty fixed blade knife manufactured in Sheffield, England. The knife features a broad, heavy carbon steel blade with a slightly curved cutting edge and a rounded, blunt tip. It is of full tang construction, with two dark toned wooden handle scales secured by five metal pins. The face of the blade is stamped with a stylized wavy snake trademark over a horizontal bar. The tang is vertically stamped with maker information in two columns reading SNAKE BRAND and SHEFFIELD. Snake Brand was a trademark utilized by the Sheffield cutlery firm Samuel and John Kitchen. The design and heavy construction are consistent with hunting or butcher knives produced during the mid to late 1800s.
Blade length: Approximately 10 inches.
Condition report:
The knife is in well used antique condition. The steel blade displays a heavy overall patina with significant surface oxidation and deep pitting throughout both faces. There is visible wear along the primary edge from repeated sharpening. The wooden handle scales show scuffs, minor scratches, and an aged finish consistent with heavy use and significant age.
