Description
One Hamilton Model 4992B G.C.T. (Greenwich Civil Time) master navigation pocket watch, specification AN 5740, manufactured for the U.S. Army Air Forces during the World War II era. The watch features a black 24-hour dial with white Arabic numerals and a white outer seconds track, marked G.C.T. at center. It is equipped with white, luminescent-tipped hour, minute, and second hands. The watch is housed in a base metal case with a prominent knurled winding crown and a large, characteristic fixed bail. The screw-down case back is engraved with the following: AN 5740, MFR’S PART NO. 33106, SERIAL NO. AF 45-7338, CONTRACT NO. W535 ac-40783, and HAMILTON WATCH CO. The serial number prefix AF 45 indicates a 1945 production year for the Air Force. The watch is accompanied by its original cardboard issue box with a printed label reading WATCH, NAVIGATION, MASTER, AN 5740, Mfrs. Part No. 4992B, U.S. ARMY AIR FORCE, and Contract # W535 AC 28072. The contract number on the box label does not match the contract number engraved on the watch case, and the serial number field on the box label is blank.
Condition report:
The watch is in good vintage condition. The dial remains clean and highly legible. The crystal shows light surface wear. The case back exhibits minor scratches consistent with age and use. There is significant brassing and loss of plating on the winding crown and the bail, showing the underlying base metal. The original cardboard box shows expected age-toning and shelf wear but remains structurally intact with a clear, legible label. The mechanical movement has not been tested for timekeeping accuracy.
