Description
This antique lot features a two-piece cardboard box containing 50 rounds of .22 Short Rimfire Smokeless ammunition manufactured by the Remington Arms Union Metallic Cartridge Co. (Remington-UMC). The box design features a distinctive dark blue and brown plaid or checked pattern background with vibrant orange labels. The top label is prominently marked .22 SHORT R.F. SMOKELESS and 50 CARTRIDGES along with a central illustration of a cartridge and the text 29 GRS. BULLET and UNGREASED. The red circular Remington-UMC trade mark is visible on the left side of the top label. The bottom of the top label identifies the manufacturer as REMINGTON ARMS UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE CO. with UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE WORKS and BRIDGEPORT, CONN. U.S.A. printed below. The side labels provide additional detail including the Remington-UMC logo, an illustration of a repeating rifle, and text stating These Cartridges are specially recommended for Remington-UMC Repeating and Specially manufactured for target and sporting purposes in all arms adapted to this size. Each cartridge features a copper-toned casing and a 29-grain ungreased lead round-nose bullet. The headstamps are stamped with the U logo for the Union Metallic Cartridge Company. Condition report:
The two-piece cardboard box is in fair to good antique condition. There is significant shelf wear throughout, including fraying at the edges, rubbing on the plaid pattern, and light staining. The orange labels show some loss, specifically on the sides where the box seams meet, and the top label has minor paper loss and discoloration from age. The ammunition inside appears well-preserved with typical oxidation on the lead bullets and age-consistent patina on the copper cases.
