Description
This lot consists of 50 antique Winchester Repeating Arms Co. .22 Short rimfire cartridges contained within an original two-piece cardboard box. The cartridges feature brass casings with a serif H headstamp and solid lead bullets. The yellow top label is prominently marked and transcribes verbatim as 50 Nº 22 RIFLE CARTRIDGES above the manufacturer information MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A. Additional markings on the top label include the H trademark in a circular logo and a patent date of OCT. 31. 18 on the right side. The box construction is typical for the late 19th century, featuring a side label with the script Winchester trademark and an end label designated SHORT, 1/2. These cartridges were designed for use in early rimfire rifles and represent a well-documented period of American ammunition production. Note – As an antique or black powder firearm, this item does not require a background check.
Condition report:
The two-piece cardboard box exhibits expected age-related wear including staining, edge fraying, and some losses to the paper labels. The top label remains largely legible with some light surface abrasions. The ammunition demonstrates a dark patina on the brass casings and varying degrees of oxidation or white bloom on the lead bullets consistent with long-term storage. All cartridges appear to be live and original to the period, though we have not tested the firing reliability of this antique ammunition.
