Description
This lot features 50 rounds of .22 Long smokeless rimfire ammunition manufactured by The Union Metallic Cartridge Co. of Bridgeport, Connecticut. The cartridges are housed in a vintage two-piece cardboard box and feature brass cases with a U headstamp and lead bullets with knurled grease grooves. Designed expressly for target and gallery practice, these improved ungreased bullets were marketed for their accuracy and cleanliness. Verbatim markings on the lid include 50 RIM FIRE CARTRIDGES and .22 CAL. LONG SMOKELESS alongside the manufacturer name and U logo. Side labels state that these cartridges having improved ungreased bullets will be found extremely accurate, reliable and cleanly. The reverse side mentions they are Manufactured expressly for Target and Gallery Practice by The U.M.C. Co. A guarantee on the bottom lists several compatible arms from makers such as Smith and Wesson, Colts, Winchester, Marlin, Remington, Savage, and Stevens. Note – As an antique or black powder firearm, this item does not require a background check.
Condition report:
The box exhibits heavy age-related wear, including edge fraying, surface staining, and a complete split along the side panels of the lid. The red paper label shows fading and minor surface loss but remains largely legible. The cartridges show natural oxidation with a dark patina on the brass cases and white lead oxidation on the bullets. The ammunition appears to be original and period-correct. We have not function-tested this ammunition.
