Description
This Manhattan Firearms Mfg. Co. six-shot percussion pepperbox pistol is chambered in .31 caliber and served as a popular self-defense sidearm in the mid-19th century. The pistol features a rotating barrel assembly consisting of six smoothbore barrels fired via a top-mounted hammer and a double action percussion mechanism. The steel receiver and backstrap are decorated with attractive floral and scroll engraving. The firearm is fitted with two-piece walnut bag-shaped grips secured by a transverse screw. Key markings include the manufacturer and location stamped on the barrel assembly as MANHATTAN F.A. MFG CO NEW.YORK and CAST STEEL. The trigger guard is stamped with the serial number 99. The frame shows some traces of original silver plating under a mottled gray patina, while the barrels exhibit a consistent dark brown finish. This antique firearm represents a quintessential example of pre-Civil War era personal protection technology. Note – As an antique or black powder firearm, this item does not require a background check.
Condition report:
The pistol is in good antique condition, with the barrel assembly retaining a smooth dark brown patina with minor surface oxidation and light pinpoint pitting. The frame and backstrap exhibit a mottled gray patina with visible traces of original silver plating remaining in the recesses of the scroll engraving. The walnut grips show moderate wear, including typical dings and scratches consistent with age and handling. The bores are dark and fouled with expected pitting. The double action mechanism appears to function correctly, with the barrel assembly rotating and the hammer cycling as intended, although the pistol has not been function-tested with live ammunition.
