Description
This lot features a full two-piece cardboard box containing 50 cartridges of Winchester .38 S&W caliber central fire ammunition. The green lid label is prominently marked MANUFACTURED BY THE Winchester Repeating Arms Co. NEW HAVEN, CONN., U.S.A. and identifies the contents as 50 CARTRIDGES. SOLID HEAD. .38 CALIBER, Central Fire. expressly for SMITH & WESSON New 38 Cal. Central Fire Revolver. The label also displays an illustration of a Smith & Wesson top-break revolver. One side of the box is stamped 38 S. & W. C. F. and another side features a printed testimonial from Smith & Wesson addressed to the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. dated AUGUST 1st, 1898. The cartridges utilize brass cases with lead round-nose bullets. Verbatim headstamps on the cartridges read W.R.A. Co. and .38 S & W. The internal 50 rounds are seated in the factory internal grid with one cartridge lying horizontally across the others. Note – As an antique or black powder firearm, this item does not require a background check.
Condition report:
The two-piece cardboard box is in fair condition, exhibiting significant edge wear, fraying, and several clear adhesive tape repairs to the corners and sides. The green lid label shows surface scuffing and minor losses but remains mostly legible. The 50 cartridges appear to be in good antique condition with age-appropriate tarnishing to the brass cases. The lead round-nose bullets show a heavy white oxidized patina common for lead ammunition of this era. All cartridges appear to be live, original, and unfired.
