Description
A hand-carved wooden duck decoy depicting a bluebill (scaup) drake, in a style attributed to the Mason Decoy Factory. The object consists of a carved wooden body with a separate head joined at the neck. It is fitted with inset amber-colored glass eyes. The paint decoration features a black head and breast, white-painted sides, and a dark back. The flat base includes various small holes and a recessed channel where a keel or weight was formerly attached. No maker’s marks, signatures, or brands are visible.
Condition report:
The decoy is in well-weathered, as-found condition. It shows extensive paint loss and heavy crazing across all surfaces, with significant alligatoring present on the white side panels. The wood is exposed in several locations. There are minor chips and drying cracks consistent with age and exposure. The original weights and rigging are missing from the underside.
