Description
This Winchester Model 37 Steelbilt is a single-shot break-action shotgun chambered for 16 gauge 2 3/4 inch shells. It is equipped with a 28 inch barrel featuring a fixed choke and a single bead front sight. The steel surfaces display a thinned blued finish that has largely transitioned into a mottled brown patina with localized areas of surface oxidation and fine pitting. The action is operated via a top-lever release and utilizes an external cocking hammer. The firearm is fitted with a plain walnut pistol grip buttstock and a matching rounded forend, both exhibiting various scratches, dents, and minor nicks consistent with field use. The buttstock is finished with a checkered black hard rubber buttplate prominently featuring the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. logo. Prominent markings include the barrel roll-stamp: MADE IN U.S.A. WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. —— PATENTS PENDING. —— MODEL 37-STEELBILT-16 GA. —— WINCHESTER (TRADE MARK) —— CHOKE —— along with a separate 2 3/4 chamber length designation. Circled WP Winchester proof marks are present on both the barrel and the receiver at the breech. Note – All firearms require a federal 4473 background check.
Condition report:
The metal finish shows significant honest wear, with the original bluing thinned and replaced by a brown patina and areas of light surface oxidation and pitting. The bore is generally bright with minor frosting noted. The action appears to function correctly, with a tight lock-up, though it has not been function-tested with live ammunition. The walnut furniture remains solid without cracks but displays a significant amount of field-related dings and scratches.
